I don't think of TV as the same sort of sink hole. Sure, you can watch trash and waste time, but you're not doom-scrolling, liking, etc. You're really just watching. Far less invasive than the social platforms.
Our relationship with tech, both collectively and personally is something that is always evolving, particularly if you’re professionally active in an online space. Definitely something worth examining.
This is a super interesting read. I think about this a lot and have many of the same concerns re: social media and AI at work. Thanks for sharing this peek into your relationship with tech :)
Of course! Nothing was uncomfortable to divulge. Anything like that - well, I kept that to myself. But this was a pretty dead-honest view into the state of things.
My biggest attention/escape sink hole is TV. I live alone so I tend to use it to keep me company.
I've given up all other social media besides substack.
I'm lucky enough to drive all day for my day job, so YouTube does a lot of heavy lifting while I drive, with regards to my research.
Great post!
J.
Thanks!

Great post. We can’t escape tech. But I do own a kindle and I love it. And yes, I do highlight on it!
Awesome! How often are you going back to the highlights and doing something with them?
Whenever I write an article I go back to the passages that I highlighted and see if there are quotes I can use to make my work weightier!
Makes sense and great idea.
Well written and well said Chris.

Indeed Ryan.
I mentioned LinkedIn. I use it professionally and more often than ever right now to build up awareness and a brand in advance of a business launch.
So, that attention and work is both helpful but also not far from some of the less productive behaviors I outlined. Always worth zooming out.

interesting, personally I never really asked myself that question.. very interesting to read your thoughts on it
And you may not feel that there is a problem.
My piece hit heavy for some. It's tough to capture nuance. I tried to paint an accurate picture of my awareness of what I'm doing.
But on day-to-day basis, I'm not so overwhelmed by technology - it is quite important to many personal and professional aspirations.
I think it's important to zoom out and give yourself an honest review on things like this (tech) and others.
